North Kalispell's errand run now ends farther up U.S. 93 than it did a year ago. Costco anchored Spring Prairie Center from 2006 until November 2025 and then moved to a larger store at North Town Center. In the ten months since, a full errand stop has filled in around the new warehouse on Cascade Loop: a car dealership, a burger-and-custard place and a fitness studio. On Oct. 1, the Montana Department of Transportation declared the two-year Reserve Drive widening finished. The one big piece still unsettled is the building Costco left behind.
Ten months, one loop road
Costco closed its Spring Prairie warehouse after business on Monday, Nov. 24, 2025. It opened the new one at 8 a.m. the next morning on U.S. 93, less than a mile north. The City of Kalispell had issued its new-retail permits for 345 and 305 Cascade Loop that March. Costco's listing for the new warehouse shows a gas station, food court, pharmacy, tire center, optical department and hearing aid center.
Here is how the rest of the loop filled in, by date:
| Opened | Business | Address |
|---|---|---|
| May 2025 | Home2 Suites by Hilton Kalispell | 454 Rivers Edge Loop |
| Nov. 25, 2025 | Costco | 345 Cascade Loop |
| Jan. 13, 2026 | Freddy's Frozen Custard & Steakburgers | 420 Cascade Loop |
| May 2026 | Core & Co. | 455 Cascade Loop |
| Ribbon-cutting Aug. 27, 2026 | Kalispell Toyota | 340 Cascade Loop |
Of the five, only the hotel opened before Costco. Everything else followed the warehouse. Freddy's opened seven weeks after Costco, and KPAX reported on its opening crowds five days later. Core & Co. is a low-impact, high-intensity Lagree studio co-owned by Cassie Baldelli and Lynn Stoll, and it opened in May two doors down from Freddy's address. Kalispell Toyota finished the cluster. Its relocation to North Town Center was first reported in May 2025, alongside Costco's. The Kalispell Chamber held a ribbon-cutting at the new 340 Cascade Loop location on Aug. 27, and the dealership now lists that address for sales, service and parts.
So in practice, a tire rotation, a Costco run, an oil change and a custard stop now share one loop road. A year ago, those errands were spread across different parts of north Kalispell.
How you get there
The way into the cluster is the traffic signal at U.S. 93 and Rose Crossing. It went in during the first phase of the Stillwater Bend development. The Daily Inter Lake's January 2025 report on that work also described future local roads and a possible bridge over the Stillwater River. Home2 Suites sits right at that corner. It has 107 suites with full kitchens, plus an indoor pool and a fire pit patio, which makes it the easy recommendation when visiting family wants to stay near the north end.
The east-west side of north Kalispell's errand traffic just got its long-promised upgrade. Schellinger Construction started on Reserve Drive between Hutton Ranch Road and Whitefish Stage Road in October 2024. As of Oct. 1, 2026, that stretch has:
- Five lanes instead of three, including a center turn lane
- A new Stillwater River bridge deck with sidewalks
- A shared-use path and a pedestrian sidewalk
- Dedicated turn lanes, signals and concrete surfacing at both the Hutton Ranch Road and Whitefish Stage Road intersections
MDT's Oct. 1 update says all traffic control has been removed. Crews will be out for a few more days at the end of this week grass seeding the road edges, and that seeding is the project's last construction work. If you've spent two construction seasons planning around cones on Reserve, the MDT project page is where that work is officially recorded as done. The project was paid for in part by a 2022 U.S. Department of Transportation Multimodal Project Discretionary Grant, which went to the delays that had built up on Reserve Drive and Whitefish Stage Road.
The building at the other end
Back at Spring Prairie Center, the 136,000-square-foot former Costco has been empty since last November. In early September, WinCo Foods submitted preliminary building-permit plans to the city, the Daily Inter Lake reported. PJ Sorensen, Kalispell's director of development, told the paper that "it looks like they are going to demo the inside of the building and make some signage and landscaping changes outside, but there is no major change of use." On Sept. 15, KPAX confirmed the remodel plans were still in permit review. No opening date has been reported.
"No major change of use" describes the zoning file. The shopping trip itself would follow WinCo's own rules. WinCo has more than 120 stores across the West and came to Montana in early 2019 with stores in Billings, Helena and Missoula. The Daily Inter Lake described how WinCo's warehouse-style stores work:
| WinCo practice | As reported |
|---|---|
| Format | Warehouse-style, with bulk buying for groceries and household items |
| Membership | Not required |
| Credit cards | Not accepted |
| Bagging | Customers bag their own |
| Hours | Most stores open 24/7, except certain holidays |
According to the paper, WinCo says skipping card payments and having customers bag their own groceries both help keep prices low. Those are chain-wide practices. How the Kalispell store will run is still an open question, since WinCo did not respond to the Daily Inter Lake before its story ran.
What isn't confirmed yet
Two more businesses have been tied to the Rivers Edge Loop side of North Town Center, but neither one has a confirmed opening as of this week.
Kalispell Superwash. City architectural-review plans dated April 2025 show a proposed car wash on Rivers Edge Loop. A January 2025 report said it had been advertised with an express tunnel wash and pet wash stations. No 2026 coverage confirms it has opened.
Stockman Bank. In May 2025, the Daily Inter Lake reported a groundbreaking for a north Kalispell branch at 471 Rivers Edge Loop, with completion expected by fall 2026. We're now in that window, but we haven't found an announcement that the branch is open.
The open questions sit at both ends of the shift. The new cluster could still pick up a car wash and a bank. The old anchor is waiting on a city permit review and a company that hasn't yet talked about timing. Interior demolition at Spring Prairie would be the first visible sign that WinCo's plans are moving forward.
